The Paradox

By Michael J. Herman

I sit in quiet meditation drowning out the loud, bombastic, pounding, disruptive sounds of the environment. Still messages from voices yelling from near and far barely discernible. Flashes of light blind my eyes. Emotions flair as the fight to still and quiet ends in subtle surrender.

In meditation I seek quiet.

I seek stillness.

I seek oneness with source.

Where is salvation from my own thoughts, fears, and inadequacies? But it’s in meditation, in deep and lasting meditation, in meditation that pervades and in which surrender is found, the noise is loudest.

When no other pollution poisons the mind and only I am a left; when echoes ask the question and answers emerge from deafening silence, alone, anonymous, and still, can I perceive that the noise and I are one.

The reality that the hustle and bustle; that the rushing from one moment to the next fleeting idea and emotional stimulation… is me, is the greatest paradox of all. That I seek silence from the noise and that I am the generator of the racket from which I flee is a loop without end.

So each day I sit in quiet seeking of the source of the noise to make sure it is as loud as possible.

I sit in quiet stillness and simultaneously generate the noise.
